Additional Resources on Humility

Humility is often misunderstood and maligned, possibly due to it’s cousin, the word “humiliate.” Humiliation comes at the hands of another, when they cause someone to feel ashamed or degraded, usually in front of others. Biblical humility is a right understanding of our God-given value that leads us to trust in Him rather than others’ valuation of us. As C.S. Lewis put it, “Humility is not thinking less of ourselves, but of ourselves less.” In fact, the most perfect picture of humility is found in Jesus who left heaven to make Himself a servant for us. In marriage, this means seeking your spouse’s good before your own and seeking to serve rather than be served. When you truly live in humility, not self-righteousness or pride, you’ll find that God blesses your marriage in ways that you never expected.
